Project Window

Stylist and designer Lula Aldunate (formerly from Elle Deco mag) just moved to NY and immediately joined ggrippo.com for a holiday window installation in our Project Window on Bedford Ave, in Williamsburg.
The Project Window space will be part of a new creative strategy to feature the work of talented emerging creators right in our headquaters in Brooklyn.
For this project, Ms Aldunate recreated a Southamerican Christmas decor, an environment specially conceived to introduce her new hand-made crochetted blankets, now available at nydesignroom.

ART banner

A new collaborative project is on view outside The Hogar Collection Gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
"ART" is a street banner that both marks the spot where art is sold (the gallery) and is in itself and art piece.
The plastic mesh piece was conceived and made by GGrippo and placed on the building facade by sculptor Todd Rosenbaum, director of the art gallery.

AiR base opening

>>>>>>>>
Finally I finished the installation, and it looked real nice and well-made, I was very happy with the results. Also I had the chance at at the request of the curator form Quartier21 to occupy the adjacent room for a week, there I install the "negatives" of the main pieces I cut out of wool felt material.
Overall the concept of the curators uniform, the transition between Brooklyn and Vienna and the time spent in Vienna doing this work and living at MQ have been an amazing experience, in great part due to the people I met while working on this project : Jasmin, Mariela , Anita and Thomas, Elisabeth and her team, all new good friends for ever. And it was very nice to reconnect and see old friends in Vienna, thank you Monika and Mark, Claudia, Doris and Franz. And thank you to all the Morath family for their support and love.

biking under the sun

>>>>>>>>
In Vienna weekend are real weekends, with stores closed from Saturday afternoon till early Monday, you are forced to relax.
I went for a long bike ride passing by Sudbahnhof, trying to find a shop where they sell construction materials.
I happend to be biking in a very direct street that took me to the train station that was called Argentinerstrasse, special for me.
When I got to the Bauhaus store it was 6 PM, and it was already closed (or quite) and although I managed to squeeze in when someone left the security guard was scarily firm in telling me to get out of there.
On my way back home I came across these images of layered posters and wrapped plastic, just what i needed to show me what to do to finish my installation!!

new home product ideas

>>>>>>>>
When cutting the pieces for the museum installation I decided to keep the "negative" shapes of the felt intact, and they became very interesting pieces in their own right, like carpets or maybe blankets. I specially like that they feel a bit Jugendtjl-inspired, perhaps because of the symmetry and organic/geometric forms.
I have learned that are two orignal artistic movemenst out of Vienna: Jugendtjl and Aktionismus, both very revolutionary in their times, one at the beginning of 20th century and the other one in the late 1960s.

natural history

>>>>>>>>
My artist-in-residence colleague Dr Mariela Gemisheva and I went to this museum looking for clues about our animal behaviour, and to reflect about the influence of nature upon art.
Walking thru the many rooms and halls we found this specimen that lived in where is today the United States 350 millions years ago, I think we had scary things over there already!
The natural history museum in Vienna is amazing, I think I saw every existing and extinguished animal from planet Earth. A journey thru time and space, we also saw a very interesting show about the influence of natural forms and materials in historic design.

For Curators Only

>>>>>>>>
My work is related to space, bridging fashion design and architecture. I build spaces for people to wear, then I recreate environments to give the clothes a referential context and a time frame.
For this project I chose three international curators as ideal clients (Storr/Buergel/Noack) and travelled between Brooklyn and Vienna looking for the shape of the curator's uniform.

vienna streetextures

>>>>>>>>
While working on my "curator's coat" I search the city for colors and textures. The 16th disctrict, where the Turkish market is has been very inspirational, it's not designed as most parts of the city, and rich in spontaneous art.

>>>>>>>>
I am also fascinated by the empty store fronts around town, where misterious spaces are waiting to be something new, or stay empty and chain-free.
